Game Show 2010
The 2010 Game Show took place on the last Sunday in June. It was a hot sunny day but unfortunately the event happened to clash with England playing in the World Cup and this meant the attendance was well down on previous years. While the accounts have not yet been finalised, it seems likely there will be very little profit (if any at all) to be distributed to the two local Rescue Teams (ourselves and the Cave Rescue Organisation).

Those visitors who did come to the Show experienced a wonderful day of events, displays and stalls. The City of Leeds Pipe Band began the proceedings in the main ring, and were followed by displays of hounds, ponies, falcons, terriers and others. Meanwhile visitors could sample archery, a climbing wall, ferret racing, Ashley’s Steam Gallopers carousel, donkey rides and a range of countryside skills. Craven Old Wheels put on their usual display of historic vehicles, complemented by vintage motor cycles and tractors. A large range of countryside clothing and wares were available at the many stalls, plus local crafts and produce. The pens of rare breeds were always popular with the children, who also enjoyed the duck herding and dog agility displays.
The highlight of the day was the Birdman Challenge, where various adventurous souls attempted to fly across the river while wearing suitable attire. We are very grateful to our new MP, Julian Smith, who bravely took on the Challenge and made a creditable leap before gracefully entering the water a few feet short of the far bank. Two intrepid constables chasing a dastardly criminal won the prize for the best turn-out – but they too unfortunately all ended up getting wet. Following a now well established tradition, David Aynesworth (the Chairman of the Game Show Committee, and manager of the Broughton Estate) made his leap with assistance from assorted pyrotechnics – but failed once again to even reach half way across the river.

A far more efficient aerial show was put on by Extra Aviation - a stunning display of aerobatics over the show ground that had people wondering when the wings would come off the plane.
As always, we are very grateful to Dalesman magazine for sponsoring the event, and we are indebted to the Tempest family for allowing us to take over their front lawn year after year to give people from far and wide the experience of a traditional country show.
Already we are working on ideas for the 2011 Game Show to make it even bigger and better than this year – and hopefully there won’t be a competing football match. We hope to see you at Broughton on 26th June 2011 (as usual, the last Sunday in June).
